1975年，阴霾笼罩着中国大地。正在黄河岸边干校劳动的何丹，突然接到调她回京的指示。何丹的归来，使大家很高兴。女儿小奚的男朋友、何丹的学生肖雨迟也赶来聚会。但当何丹从女儿口中得知他放弃大提琴，参加了文化部"初澜"写作班子时，心中十分不安。何丹原是乐团的负责人，这次被调回来，现任的领导刘亮向她下达的任务竟是要她写一篇批判《黄河大合唱》的文章，何丹断然拒绝。深夜，何丹的老战友，在周总理身边工作的王振魁来到何家，他带来了总理对何丹的问候，何丹深受鼓舞。她鼓励乐团老指挥周炎重新拿起指挥棒参加演出，热情辅导以雷大龙为首的工人业余演出队排演《黄河大合唱》。何丹的这些活动，引起"四人帮"在文化部的代理人--部长的注意和恐慌。他们一面秘密绑架了雷大龙，一面收买利欲熏心的肖雨迟。何丹母女发现肖雨迟带着写好的攻击周总理的文章要以何丹的名义发表，又得悉是他出卖了雷大龙，对...
