该剧改编自翁贝托·艾柯的符号学推理经典小说，讲述修道院中的谋杀案：1327年的意大利，方济会修士威廉(特托罗)和他的学徒Adso(达米安·哈顿)来到位于阿尔卑斯山的一座僻静修道院，目击了一系列谋杀。调查途中，他们被教堂检察官Bernardo Gui(艾弗雷特)追捕，后者无情起诉任何对于天主教教义有批判的人。
