19世纪浪漫主义时期的柏林。年轻的诗人海因里希相信爱情（克里斯蒂安·弗里德尔饰）能够战胜死亡，然而他无法说服自己的表妹玛丽同自己一起自杀。对此感到失望的海因里希把目标转向了亨丽埃特，一位商人的妻子。一开始，亨丽埃特对海因里希的想法感到不可理喻，然而当她发现自己身患不治之症之后，她的想法改变了。
